Snowdrift and sea spray icing
06.09.2017 - Multiconsult
Multiconsult offers design of icing-mitigation measures for drilling rigs, production platforms and vessels based on numerical simulation models developed through strategic cold climate research projects in combination with experience from field work and field observations.
Snow and snow drift represent challenges to structures onshore and offshore. Snowdrift will increase actions on structures in general, in specific equipment, escape ways and operations.
Semi-empirical formulas are often used to assess sea spray icing on smaller vessels. However these methods will largely overestimate icing risk on larger structures. Multiconsult applies more reliable methodologies to establish a comprehensive design basis for sea spray icing delivering both safety and cost benefits.

Power from shore
30.10.2017 - ABB
Traditionally, offshore platforms generate their own electricity by burning fossil fuels to run onboard gas turbines and/or diesel-powered generating units, resulting in local pollution to the environment. As we move operations into the environmentally sensitive arctic regions, it's important to lower our emissions.
ABB's solution is to supply offshore installations with electricity from the mainland using a power cable transmission system. By replacing costly onboard electrical generating systems burning natural gas or diesel fuel, a power-from-shore solution can eliminate platform CO2 emissions entirely. It also increases available space and reduces weight on the platform, and improves the working environment. In addition, cable systems are easier to maintain than generators.

NORSAR’s extensive network of infrasound and seismic stations has proven to provide novel observations of weather and climate related phenomena both in the atmosphere and the cryosphere, such as in glaciers. Seasonal and long-term temperature variations influence the dynamics of glaciers and large ice-sheets like those found on Greenland, Svalbard and Antarctica. Glacial movements and calving generate both seismic signals propagating underground and acoustic signals in the air which are observable by highly sensitive permanent and mobile instrumentation.
NORSAR's seismic stations can be used as an additional tool to permanently monitor glaciers and ice sheets, when satellite based methods have coverage problems due to non-stationary satellite positions, weather conditions or polar nights.

INSUBSEA® automation
13.11.2017 - ABB
Subsea automation is a complex business, partly because machines with different functions from different vendors have to be integrated into a single system, and partly because more and more functions are being relocated to the bottom of sea.
The solution as ABB sees it where the entire processing plant – production, separation and storage – is relocated to the sea bed and the oil and gas is piped from there directly to onshore tanks.
This will bring customers more effective, reliable and flexible oil and gas production solutions and will enhance how production equipment on the seafloor is powered and controlled by applications on shore or platforms, lowering costs and enabling economically viable production at fields far from existing infrastructure and often in harsh environments.
SPO Compact Flange
11.09.2017 - Freudenberg Oil & Gas Technologies
The SPO Compact Flange technology is a bolted static pipe connection with a leakage probability in the same range as welded connections, which is considerable lower than standard ASME and API flanges. The flanges are especially well suited in demanding applications such as for extreme low temperature and in dynamic loading situations, and when high external forces and bending moments exists.
SPO Compact Flanges is the basis for ISO 27509, but extends beyond this standard up to 20 000 psi pressure class and flanges types such as swivel ring flanges, blind flanges and additional components such as high integrity seal rings. These compact flanges have been used in the North Sea and subsea projects worldwide in subsea processing structures like subsea pump systems for more than 10 years.
INSUBSEA® Direct Electrical Heating (DEH) system
13.11.2017 - ABB
One of the obvious problems posed by working in deep waters, and often in remote and harsh environments, is that the equipment is inaccessible. Direct Electrical Heating (DEH) system prevents the formation of hydrate and wax in flowlines and pipelines, without the use of chemicals. ABB's INSUBSEA® DEH systems consist of a tailor-made topside package installed in the platform‘s local equipment room (LER), or delivered as a complete module/containerized solution. The package contains transformer, compensation unit, symmetration unit, control and protection products and fibre optical measurement.
The benefits include longer equipment lifetime, reduced site construction schedule, reduction in Opex and Capex and an environmentally-friendly solution.
DeepSeaMaster subsea flow measurement
08.11.2017 - ABB
DeepSeaMaster is a flowmeter used on the sea bed to inject additives or to measure product, often at depths of many hundreds of meters. Construction materials are a critical factor in subsea applications, as resistance to severe erosion and corrosion is essential. DeepSeaMaster can be fabricated from a wide range of alternative materials, although Duplex and Super Duplex are most common.
The DeepSeaMaster is designed for use in arctic environments. It handles low ambient temperatures coupled with higher fluid temperatures and conditions where both the environment and the process fluid are aggressive.
ABB supplies material traceability certificates to ensure the quality and suitability of the material used in the manufacture of all subsea flow elements.
The Seabox™ subsea water treatment module is installed on the seafloor, designed to treat 40 000 bpd of sea water for injection, directly into subsea wells or via topside. The Seabox™ module disinfects water and removes all solids down to 10 μm using electrolysis and long residence time. Subsea water treatment ensures operators’ flexibility to adjust capacity needs as well as implement water injection on fields otherwise found too expensive.
For arctic conditions, the Seabox™ module will mean a reduction in chemicals used, lower energy demand and reduced need for offshore manning. It is not obstructed by topside weight and space or distance to injection wells. The Seabox™ will accelerate production and increase recovery through flexibility and a more active reservoir management.
The SWIT™ subsea water treatment and intake technology, with the Seabox™ module as its cornerstone, utilizes filtration and membrane technology to tailor raw seawater to reservoir requirements – particle-free, low salinity or low sulfate water. The SWIT™ technology reduces the need for maintenance without compromising performance, all done subsea. Removing filtration and membrane equipment from topside facility reduces topside infrastructure and offshore manning. There is a significant reduction in CAPEX and OPEX, but still greater availability is achieved through the SWIT™ water treatment technology.
For arctic climate this solution provides a more environmental friendly approach to water treatment, due to decreased use of chemicals, power consumption and need for topside infrastructure.
