Multiconsult offers design of icing-mitigation measures for drilling rigs, production platforms and vessels based on numerical simulation models developed through strategic cold climate research projects in combination with experience from field work and field observations.
Snow and snow drift represent challenges to structures onshore and offshore. Snowdrift will increase actions on structures in general, in specific equipment, escape ways and operations.
Semi-empirical formulas are often used to assess sea spray icing on smaller vessels. However these methods will largely overestimate icing risk on larger structures. Multiconsult applies more reliable methodologies to establish a comprehensive design basis for sea spray icing delivering both safety and cost benefits.

For facilities that shall operate in areas with sea ice and/or glacial ice one important aspect is the load and load response from interaction with sea ice and/or glacial ice. DNV GL offer advisory services towards establishing the load/response from an interaction with sea ice/glacial ice. The level of detail of such an analysis will vary depending on project phase where conceptual studies require less details and refinement than studies performed at a later stage in the field development.

DNV GL delivers advisory, verification and technology qualification services, supporting all aspects of designing arctic offshore structures. This includes estimating loads from sea ice and icebergs for structural design and global response analysis for moored floating structures.

No environment challenges the oil and gas industry more than the Arctic. Floaters are exposed to extremes: low temperatures can freeze machinery; ice floes can shatter ships and platforms. The Moss team is experienced in designing floaters with ice-breaking and survival capabilities to withstand the impact of the Arctic extremes.

Moss Maritime has significant experience in developing floating production units adapted for harsh conditions in cold climate and with possibility of ice encounters. A key reference project for harsh ice conditions is the ship-shaped FPU in the Shtokman development project. We have also delivered several ice-capable semi-submersible drilling rigs.

Traditionally, offshore platforms generate their own electricity by burning fossil fuels to run onboard gas turbines and/or diesel-powered generating units, resulting in local pollution to the environment. As we move operations into the environmentally sensitive arctic regions, it's importan to lower our emissions.

ABB's solution is to supply offshore installations with electricity from the mainland using a power cable transmission system. By replacing costly onboard electrical generating systems burning natural gas or diesel fuel, a power-from-shore solution can eliminate platform CO2 emissions entirely. It also increases available space and reduces weight on the platform, and improves the working environment. In addition, cable systems are easier to maintain than generators.

Marine Aluminium supplied the world’s first aluminium helideck in 1974 and has since delivered over 560 aluminium helidecks to projects worldwide. Our last major development is the winterization of helidecks with hot water.
Our helideck hot water heating system is using excess heat from available heat resources on the vessel/platform. The helideck top profiles have slots for heating coils, allowing hot water to distribute heat evenly on the surface of the helideck. The system is approved by DNV-GL.
The Helideck hot water heating system is an environmentally friendly solution compared to the alternative; electrical heat tracing. In addition the system is easy to install, has low material cost and low operation cost due to the energy input being excess heat from the vessel/platform system.

Multiconsult is offering design of landfall, seabed structures and buried pipelines in shallow waters subjected to ice drift and seabed scouring.
Ice drift and seabed scouring govern the design of landfall and seabed structures in shallow waters and the burial depth of pipelines. Numerical modeling of ice interaction is feasible, but involves advanced FEM methods. In addition, permafrost is present in extreme Arctic locations. Permafrost in shorelines is dynamic and poses challenges to the design of nearshore structures in shallow waters and landfalls.
Multiconsult is an industry partner in the strategic research program (SFI) at NTNU that focuses on shore erosion and shore dynamics with permafrost/shoreline interaction.

LNG expands by 600 times when it is transformed from a liquid to a gaseous state. The gas will only maintain its liquid state at a constant temperature of less than -163°C. Therefore, the high quality and dependable insulation of pipelines, processing plants and transport vessels are vital to the LNG business.

For LNG receiving terminals and vapour recovery pipelines, KAEFER has developed the Pre-Insulation (CCP) system; a high-performance and variable insulation product especially designed for cold and cryogenic media. The pipe segments are modular and flexible, allowing pipes to be insulated efficiently before they are installed on site. This means they are not subject to environmental variables and the process saves time and money by ensuring high quality and lower levels of manpower.

The Thermtech Cuttings Cleaner (TCC®) is a thermal technology developed by Thermtech to treat drill cuttings. In the TCC® the drilling waste is separated into three main components, mineral solids, base oil and water. The highly valuable drilling fluids are under influence of high temperature only for a few seconds, resulting in a very high quality of the recovered fluids which can be re-used in new drilling mud, while the mineral solids can be discharged to sea meeting the toughest discharge limits. With appropriate weather protection, the TCC® can be operated in harsh environments.

The TCC® is the only thermal desorption technology currently approved for use offshore.

The benefits for the customer:

The three existing Sevan deepwater drilling rigs provide a robust and stable platform for drilling operations. The enclosed moonpool, the large load carrying capacity and fuel efficient dynamic positioning (DP) operation are valued by operators.

Based on the experience from our existing deepwater drilling units, we have developed units for operation in harsh and arctic environments. These units are winterized and have ice-strengthened hulls, in addition to having the same benefits as the existing Sevan units. The main focus in the design development has been to provide an efficient drilling factory with a minimum environmental footprint. Reduced emissions are achieved by use of hybrid power solutions, variable speed drives and waste heat recovery.

NORSAR’s extensive network of infrasound and seismic stations has proven to provide novel observations of weather and climate related phenomena both in the atmosphere and the cryosphere, such as in glaciers. Seasonal and long-term temperature variations influence the dynamics of glaciers and large ice-sheets like those found on Greenland, Svalbard and Antarctica. Glacial movements and calving generate both seismic signals propagating underground and acoustic signals in the air which are observable by highly sensitive permanent and mobile instrumentation.

NORSAR's seismic stations can be used as an additional tool to permanently monitor glaciers and ice sheets, when satellite based methods have coverage problems due to non-stationary satellite positions, weather conditions or polar nights.

OWL™ (Oil in Water Locator) is the world's smallest HLIF LiDAR. It can "fingerprint" oil, and thus receive a real-time identification of oil category and type (crude oil, hydraulic oil, etc.) on the spot, with no samples or lab analysis required. It can be used for optimization of clean up processes, post cleaning control and dispersant efficiency control.

The detector is weatherized to withstand harsh weather such as extreme cold and is well suited for arctic conditions. The system is fully autonomous and provides real time information, day and night, about oil in water. The system reacts specifically to oil molecules and is immune to weather induced false alarms.

Subsea automation is a complex business, partly because machines with different functions from different vendors have to be integrated into a single system, partly because more and more functions are being relocated to the bottom of sea.
The solution as ABB sees it where the entire processing plant – production, separation and storage – is relocated to the sea bed and the oil and gas is piped from there directly to onshore tanks.
This will bring customers more effective, reliable and flexible oil and gas production solutions and will enhance how production equipment on the seafloor is powered and controlled by applications on shore or platforms, lowering costs and enabling economically viable production at fields far from existing infrastructure and often in harsh environments.

DeepSeaMaster is a flowmeter used on the sea bed to inject additives or to measure product, often at depths of many hundreds of meters. Construction materials are a critical factor in subsea applications, as resistance to severe erosion and corrosion is essential. DeepSeaMaster can be fabricated from a wide range of alternative materials, although Duplex and Super Duplex are most common.

The DeepSeaMaster is designed for use in arctic environments. It handles low ambient temperatures coupled with higher fluid temperatures and conditions where both the environment and the process fluid are aggressive.

ABB supplies material traceability certificates to ensure the quality and suitability of the material used in the manufacture of all subsea flow elements.

The SWIT™ subsea water treatment and intake technology, with the Seabox™ module as its cornerstone, utilizes filtration and membrane technology to tailor raw seawater to reservoir requirements – particle-free, low salinity or low sulfate water. The SWIT™ technology reduces the need for maintenance without compromising performance. All done subsea. Removing filtration and membrane equipment from topside facility reduces topside infrastructure and offshore manning. There is a significant reduction in CAPEX and OPEX, but still greater availability is achieved through the SWIT™ water treatment technology. For artic climate this solution provides a more environmental friendly approach to water treatment, due to decreased use of chemicals, power consumption and need for topside infrastructure.

WME manufactures on-site nitrogen generator systems utilizing membrane air separation technology. Membrane modules contain thousands of hair-like membranes that collectively separate large amounts of high purity, dry nitrogen directly from compressed air, which may be applied to prevent degradation of cargo sensitive to oxygen, moisture or combustion by-products.

Pressurized nitrogen can also be used to fill pipes to protect from freezing in arctic conditions. Pre-heating of air and insulated cabinets with heater and heat tracing of pipes will enable the nitrogen generator to function in extreme weather conditions.

WME has over 20 years experience and can deliver both custom made or standardized nitrogen generators to offshore platforms, FPO/FPSO's and maritime installations.

DNV GL can assist in developing an Ice management procedure for temporary or permanent operations for facilities that operate in areas where there is a risk for interaction between the facility and sea ice and/or glacial ice. Ice management is performed either (i) to avoid interaction between an installation and ice (sea ice and/or glacial ice), or (ii) to reduce the global and local ice loads. Most commonly it is used to support floating installations. “Any ice management approach that is intended to support the operation of an offshore system shall be configured to achieve an acceptable level of overall system reliability“ (ISO 19906, 2010). DNV GL has experience both with ice management in design and in making an ice management procedure for customers operating in the Barents Sea.

GMC Maritime provides preproduced and moulded escapeways with heattrace for floors and stairs, suitable in arctic regions. The system is delivered with Power Management System to achieve minimum energy use while keeping escapeways free of ice and snow (surface temperature at approx. 2 degrees celsius). The system is approved by a Letter of Compliance with anti-icing performance requirements of DNVGL-OS-A201 and covers DNVGL notation Basic, Cold and Polar. The system is approved down to -25 degrees celsius.

Heated escapeways keep the surface free for ice and snow, providing a safe environment for normal walking and evacuation if needed. Moulded escapeways are flexible and a cost efficient way of heating surfaces in order to ensure safe operations in the arctic regions.

KSAT provides Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical satellite imagery for ice detection and monitoring. SAR is a well-suited sensor for sea ice monitoring due to its ability to image the sea surface through darkness and clouds. SAR imagery can cover huge areas (up to 500x500 km), and due to the polar orbits of the SAR satellites, potential image acquisition frequency increases with latitude.

KSAT has licenses and equipment to task, downlink and process SAR imagery from all the relevant commercial SAR satellites in orbit. In addition, KSAT owns and operates the world’s largest commercial ground station at the island of Svalbard (SvalSAT) and the TrollSAT ground station in Antarctica. By downlinking imagery to these stations, global imagery can be accessed and delivered extremely fast.

In order to design for the environmental conditions the installation shall operate under there is a need to establish the metocean design basis. In a cold climate this may include sea ice, icebergs, snow and icing in addition to the conventional environment from wind, waves and current. DNV GL has experience both with establishing and verifying metocean design bases for cold climate areas and for conventional areas. DNV GL delivers advisory, verification and technology qualification services, supporting all aspects of designing arctic offshore structures, including:
- Metocean design basis, including ice, snow and icing
- Estimates of marine and atmospheric icing
