For facilities that shall operate in areas with sea ice and/or glacial ice one important aspect is the load and load response from interaction with sea ice and/or glacial ice. DNV GL offer advisory services towards establishing the load/response from an interaction with sea ice/glacial ice. The level of detail of such an analysis will vary depending on project phase where conceptual studies require less details and refinement than studies performed at a later stage in the field development.

DNV GL delivers advisory, verification and technology qualification services, supporting all aspects of designing arctic offshore structures. This includes estimating loads from sea ice and icebergs for structural design and global response analysis for moored floating structures.

Traditionally, offshore platforms generate their own electricity by burning fossil fuels to run onboard gas turbines and/or diesel-powered generating units, resulting in local pollution to the environment. As we move operations into the environmentally sensitive arctic regions, it's importan to lower our emissions.

ABB's solution is to supply offshore installations with electricity from the mainland using a power cable transmission system. By replacing costly onboard electrical generating systems burning natural gas or diesel fuel, a power-from-shore solution can eliminate platform CO2 emissions entirely. It also increases available space and reduces weight on the platform, and improves the working environment. In addition, cable systems are easier to maintain than generators.

Marine Aluminium supplied the world’s first aluminium helideck in 1974 and has since delivered over 560 aluminium helidecks to projects worldwide. Our last major development is the winterization of helidecks with hot water.
Our helideck hot water heating system is using excess heat from available heat resources on the vessel/platform. The helideck top profiles have slots for heating coils, allowing hot water to distribute heat evenly on the surface of the helideck. The system is approved by DNV-GL.
The Helideck hot water heating system is an environmentally friendly solution compared to the alternative; electrical heat tracing. In addition the system is easy to install, has low material cost and low operation cost due to the energy input being excess heat from the vessel/platform system.

The Thermtech Cuttings Cleaner (TCC®) is a thermal technology developed by Thermtech to treat drill cuttings. In the TCC® the drilling waste is separated into three main components, mineral solids, base oil and water. The highly valuable drilling fluids are under influence of high temperature only for a few seconds, resulting in a very high quality of the recovered fluids which can be re-used in new drilling mud, while the mineral solids can be discharged to sea meeting the toughest discharge limits. With appropriate weather protection, the TCC® can be operated in harsh environments.

The TCC® is the only thermal desorption technology currently approved for use offshore.

The benefits for the customer:
- No skip and ship
- Less handling
- Less Crane lifts
- Less new fluids to be bought

MudCube is the first compact and lightweight solids control system for all type of drilling fluids, eliminating the traditional process of shaking fluid and solids. The MudCube primary solids control technology separates solids and liquid differently from the traditional type of high G-forces vibrating shale shakers. It uses a combination of high air flow and vacuum to separate all types of drilling fluids from drilled solids. This results in reduced noise and vibration, and reduced oil-vapor and oil-mist.

MudCube has unique integrated ventilation that allows for customized designed for closed and winterized drilling units in arctic conditions. Compared to traditional shakers, the MudCube has a similar footprint, significantly less weight, and reduce the loss of drilling fluid up to 80%.

The Cuttings Transportation System (CTS) is developed to transport cuttings away from the well area during top-hole drilling on semi-submersible rigs and jack-ups during clean-up operations on the seabed. This has a major impact on the viability of drilling operations, especially in environmentally sensitive areas such as the arctic.

The modular design of the CTS enables easy installation on most rig types. It is designed to run for long periods without maintenance and be able to pump large particles without blockages occurring.

CTS benefits:
- Cost savings by removing the need for a supply vessel
- Keeping templates cutting-free
- Saving time when laying pipes and tying in umbilicals
- Suitable in environmentally sensitive areas as little or no footprint is created on the seabed

The oil and gas industry is dependent on processes that produce waste water/slop. Given the nature of the discharge limits offshore, a high percentage of the generated waste water/slop must be transported to shore for treatment.

Soiltech offers technology that treats the generated waste water/slop on location that allow for discharge to sea, and thus removes the need for transportation to shore for treatment. This is very beneficial for operators offshore, especially in remote locations such as the arctic, as the time and cost for transportation to shore is removed. The technology is a mechanical process where no chemicals are being used. It is proven and already in use on existing operations in the Barents Sea.

Limited amount of existing subsurface data can lead to delays and incidents during drilling. In DrillWatch projects, OCTIO deploys seismic sensors on the seabed analysing noise from the drillbit and fracturing in order to provide:
- Geosteering of drillbit
- Seismic imaging of structures ahead of the drillbit
- Monitoring of fractures and their location
- Improved knowledge base for planning future wells

OCTIO DrillWatch is especially useful in the Barents Sea, due to shallow reservoirs, a complex geology and compass unreliability in northern latitudes. OCTIO’s 4C seismic seabed systems have been successfully used at injection wells to detect and position injection events, induced fracturing and perforation shots. A first pilot test is conducted successfully in the Barents Sea.

KSAT offers an oil spill detection service based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite imagery. SAR is a well-suited sensor for oil spill detection due to its ability to see very thin oil films on the sea surface even in darkness and cloudy weather.

The service provides regular or emergency monitoring for oil slicks on the sea surface. The oil spill detection service can be combined with sea ice detection and monitoring.

KSAT has licenses and equipment to task, downlink and process SAR imagery from all the relevant commercial SAR satellites in orbit. In addition, KSAT owns and operates the world’s largest commercial ground station at the island of Svalbard (SvalSAT). Hence, global analysed imagery can be accessed and delivered extremely fast.

OWL™ (Oil in Water Locator) is the world's smallest HLIF LiDAR. It can "fingerprint" oil, and thus receive a real-time identification of oil category and type (crude oil, hydraulic oil, etc.) on the spot, with no samples or lab analysis required. It can be used for optimization of clean up processes, post cleaning control and dispersant efficiency control.

The detector is weatherized to withstand harsh weather such as extreme cold and is well suited for arctic conditions. The system is fully autonomous and provides real time information, day and night, about oil in water. The system reacts specifically to oil molecules and is immune to weather induced false alarms.

GeoTool-Inject is a market-leading Software for monitoring and analyzing injection wells in real-time. The solution converts well- and reservoir data automatically into operational input, empowering the user to better monitor and control their injection operations.

In the barents, Geomec has assisted with design and execution for one of the shallowest injections ever performed in Norway, maybe even in the world. The injection was performed safely and with absolute condifence about the rock integrity.

Avoiding out-of-zone-injection will greatly reduce the risk and cost of injection leakages from 25% to 5%. Injection leakages may be automatically detected within a few hours. There is also an enormous potential to increase oil recovery through pressure support wells by up to 5-10%.

Geophysical monitoring of hydrocarbon reservoirs provides increased recovery, hence a more efficient use of resources in environmentally sensitive areas. However, traditional surveying with active seismic guns is a costly operation with impact on sea life, e.g. on mammals in arctic regions. Gravitude gWatch provides an alternative monitoring technology based on seabed gravity measurements with a negligible environmental impact.

Gravimetry monitoring provides:
- Measurement of aquifer strength, providing a better estimate of remaining reserves and an optimized recovery strategy.
- Monitoring of fluid contact movements, providing better forecast of water break-through.
- Mapping of hydrocarbon depletion and identification of unproduced compartments, representing infill well opportunities.

Subsea automation is a complex business, partly because machines with different functions from different vendors have to be integrated into a single system, partly because more and more functions are being relocated to the bottom of sea.
The solution as ABB sees it where the entire processing plant – production, separation and storage – is relocated to the sea bed and the oil and gas is piped from there directly to onshore tanks.
This will bring customers more effective, reliable and flexible oil and gas production solutions and will enhance how production equipment on the seafloor is powered and controlled by applications on shore or platforms, lowering costs and enabling economically viable production at fields far from existing infrastructure and often in harsh environments.

DeepSeaMaster is a flowmeter used on the sea bed to inject additives or to measure product, often at depths of many hundreds of meters. Construction materials are a critical factor in subsea applications, as resistance to severe erosion and corrosion is essential. DeepSeaMaster can be fabricated from a wide range of alternative materials, although Duplex and Super Duplex are most common.

The DeepSeaMaster is designed for use in arctic environments. It handles low ambient temperatures coupled with higher fluid temperatures and conditions where both the environment and the process fluid are aggressive.

ABB supplies material traceability certificates to ensure the quality and suitability of the material used in the manufacture of all subsea flow elements.

The Seabox™ subsea water treatment module is installed on the seafloor, designed to treat 40 000 bpd of sea water for injection, directly into subsea wells or via topside. The Seabox™ module disinfects water and removes all solids down to 10μm using electrolysis and long residence time. Subsea water treatment ensures operators’ flexibility to adjust capacity needs as well as implement water injection on fields otherwise found too expensive. For artic conditions, the Seabox™ module will mean a reduction in chemicals used, lower energy demand and reduced need for offshore manning. It is not obstructed by topside weight and space or distance to injection wells. The Seabox™ will accelerate production and increase recovery through flexibility and a more active reservoir management.

The SWIT™ subsea water treatment and intake technology, with the Seabox™ module as its cornerstone, utilizes filtration and membrane technology to tailor raw seawater to reservoir requirements – particle-free, low salinity or low sulfate water. The SWIT™ technology reduces the need for maintenance without compromising performance. All done subsea. Removing filtration and membrane equipment from topside facility reduces topside infrastructure and offshore manning. There is a significant reduction in CAPEX and OPEX, but still greater availability is achieved through the SWIT™ water treatment technology. For artic climate this solution provides a more environmental friendly approach to water treatment, due to decreased use of chemicals, power consumption and need for topside infrastructure.

Traditional pump solutions with a central pump room mean wasted space, added risk and higher operational costs. Framo pumps are different. Submerged in simple sidemounted caissons, our pumps eliminate both hull penetrations and the need for a massive internal pump room and extensive piping.

Powered with the unique electric Framo cable-free concept, submersible pumps also ensure increased uptime. This is thanks to a short, stiff rotating shaft that avoids excessive wear and tear. The total result is an oil and gas pumping solution that reduces risk while saving both space and money.

The finished pumping system is insulated, cooled and lubricated by a small external oil circulation unit, preventing any ingress, enabling it to operate continuously in the toughest conditions.

FRAMO electric fire water pumping systems are the preferred solution when higher pumping capacities are needed, or when the generator package is located too far from the fire water pump. In our solution, the diesel generator supplies power to a cable-free electric submersible pump.

The generator package is a complete containerized unit. It includes a fuel tank, starting system and ancillaries, installed on a single skid in accordance with NFPA20 and industry standards for fire water systems. Having all components in a single, fire-rated enclosure offers technical advantages that lead to savings. Optimized in size and weight, the module is simple to install on deck and designed for ease of maintenance and continuous operation in remote locations and tough conditions, such as the arctic.

Framo hydraulic fire water pumping systems, with single-stage pumps that rotate slowly during standby, offer a minimal start load and the best possible preparedness. The system use a submerged hydraulically driven pump. This pump lifts the water to deck level, where it feeds into a pump that is directly driven by the diesel engine. Consequently, the diesel engine’s start load is kept to a minimum.

The lift pump runs continuously at low speedin standby mode, driven by a flow of low-pressure hydraulic fluid circulated by a small electrically driven pump. This ensures continuous availability and lubrication/heating of the fire water lift pump and preventing marine growth in the pump. In harsh environments far from land, such as operations in the arctic, pump reliability is top priority.

FRAMO Water Injection Pumping Systems are the reliable way to increase reservoir pressure. The high-power stages are arranged back-to-back for balanced thrust forces, and the high-speed shaft operates well below first critical speed. The system is designed for minimal wear and tear and easy maintenance, even when working with produced water. The system have shown more than 98% average availability in over 4,000,000 operating hours logged, making it reliable and suitable for use in remote locations.

The FRAMO Water Injection Pumping Systems is value adding by having less than half the footprint of a BB pump. Because a booster pump is integrated into the main injection pump, we eliminate the need for a separate pump with associated piping, valves and manifolds.

DNV GL can assist in developing an Ice management procedure for temporary or permanent operations for facilities that operate in areas where there is a risk for interaction between the facility and sea ice and/or glacial ice. Ice management is performed either (i) to avoid interaction between an installation and ice (sea ice and/or glacial ice), or (ii) to reduce the global and local ice loads. Most commonly it is used to support floating installations. “Any ice management approach that is intended to support the operation of an offshore system shall be configured to achieve an acceptable level of overall system reliability“ (ISO 19906, 2010). DNV GL has experience both with ice management in design and in making an ice management procedure for customers operating in the Barents Sea.

The UPTIME AMC gangway facilitates transit from a floating vessel to a fixed or floating installation. The crew is protected from the elements and risks by using smaller crew transfer vessels are removed.

The gangway systems have environmental protection for the crew, heating of oil and machinery and operators, lights to operate in constant dusk or dark and camera systems for off-site supervision and control.

By using weatherproof gangways, crew can transit with little risk and effort from support vessel to an installation. The support vessel does not have to use smaller skiffs that are prone to icing, navigation challenges and less protection against the environment.

Firesafe has developed a fire and blast bellow for sealing the gap between the hatch coaming and riser, both drilling and intervention risers. The product was originally developed for ConocoPhillips but has later also been supplied to other operators, like Statoil. The bellow has been tested and approved for jet-fire (350kW/m2, >15min), HC-fire (H0) and blast up to 1.4 barg. The flexible seal can also accommodate for riser movements, both horizontally (up to 900mm) and vertically (up to 150mm). Former clients are very pleased and satisfied with the product. Additional features are protection against falling objects and weather seal. Keeping decks fully sealed (e.g. against snow, rain, spill etc.) enhances the working conditions and is very important in harsh environment like the arctic.

Our services include verification of source, noise and vibration levels, noise reduction and speech intelligibility (PAGA). For procurement of equipment, we prepare specific requirements for each package. We undertake close monitoring of suppliers and witnessing of factory acceptance test.
In cold climate, wind- and ice induced noise and vibrations require special consideration. Excessive noise levels affect the work environment and can inhibit communication in critical situations.
Meeting noise and vibration limits is essential for HSE, project cost and progress. Vibrations can even lead to equipment malfunction. Multiconsult has the necessary in-house experience and equipment for area noise mapping and personnel dosimeter measurements, as well as data simulations of noise levels.

KSAT provides Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical satellite imagery for ice detection and monitoring. SAR is a well-suited sensor for sea ice monitoring due to its ability to image the sea surface through darkness and clouds. SAR imagery can cover huge areas (up to 500x500 km), and due to the polar orbits of the SAR satellites, potential image acquisition frequency increases with latitude.

KSAT has licenses and equipment to task, downlink and process SAR imagery from all the relevant commercial SAR satellites in orbit. In addition, KSAT owns and operates the world’s largest commercial ground station at the island of Svalbard (SvalSAT) and the TrollSAT ground station in Antarctica. By downlinking imagery to these stations, global imagery can be accessed and delivered extremely fast.
