For facilities that shall operate in areas with sea ice and/or glacial ice, one important aspect is the load and load response from interaction with sea ice and/or glacial ice. DNV GL offers advisory services towards establishing the load/response from an interaction with sea ice/glacial ice. The level of detail of such an analysis will vary depending on project phase where conceptual studies require less details and refinement than studies performed at a later stage in the field development.

DNV GL delivers advisory, verification and technology qualification services, supporting all aspects of designing arctic offshore structures. This includes estimating loads from sea ice and icebergs for structural design and global response analysis for moored floating structures.

Aluminium is an emerging material in offshore and marine construction. Hydro provides specialist design support and manufacture solutions using extrusion technology which is used mainly in structural applications, such as floors, framework, housing modules and helipads.

Aluminium is lighter than steel and can cope with the same heavy structural loads and hostile environment as other metals. Unlike most steel grades, aluminium does not become brittle at low temperatures. Instead, aluminium gets stronger and its ductility and toughness increases, making it suitable in the Arctic.

As weight saving is one of the levers for reducing cost in the offshore and marine industries, using aluminium has a direct impact on transportation cost, and cost and time for installation and decommissioning.

Traditionally, offshore platforms generate their own electricity by burning fossil fuels to run onboard gas turbines and/or diesel-powered generating units, resulting in local pollution to the environment. As we move operations into the environmentally sensitive arctic regions, it's important to lower our emissions.

ABB's solution is to supply offshore installations with electricity from the mainland using a power cable transmission system. By replacing costly onboard electrical generating systems burning natural gas or diesel fuel, a power-from-shore solution can eliminate platform CO2 emissions entirely. It also increases available space and reduces weight on the platform, and improves the working environment. In addition, cable systems are easier to maintain than generators.

Minox's process for deoxygenation is a state-of-the-art technology for removing oxygen from water before it is reinjected into reservoirs. A key process feature of the Minox®Compact deoxygenation system is the method of contacting the nitrogen stream with the water. This is done in static mixers where co-current turbulent flow is achieved, producing highly efficient mixing of water and gas, simultaneously stripping the dissolved oxygen from the water – to very low concentrations.

The Minox®Compact is fully automated and insulated to handle arctic environments. The low system weight combined with flexible and skid mounted design allows for efficient tailoring in accordance to the customer’s specifications. Each unit can be tailor-made to fit into virtually any given space.

Minox's process for deoxygenation is a state-of-the-art technology for removing oxygen from water before it is reinjected into reservoirs. Based upon the same basic principle of cycling and purifying nitrogen gas, the Minox®Tower system offers a competitive alternative to vacuum and fuel gas deaerators, yielding a very low residual O2 content. In this system, the contacting between the nitrogen stream and the water is done through counter-current flow over a packed bed of structure packing.

The benefits of using Minox®Tower is mainly that the danger related to using natural gas as stripping gas is removed. In addition, it has reduced weight and lower operational expenditures compared to other systems, and is fully automated and insulated to handle arctic environments.

Minox's process for deoxygenation is a state-of-the-art technology for removing oxygen from water before it is reinjected into reservoirs. Our current new development is the patented Minox®DryGas, an innovative, compact and lightweight system for dehydration of natural gas. The new technology, based on static mixers and high tech separation, will replace the existing, old technology based on high and heavy contactor towers.

The Minox®DryGas is fully automated and insulated to handle arctic environments. The system will, at higher pressure and lower temperatures, require less TEG in circulation than conventional contactor towers. This will again give a reduction in size, weight and energy consumption of the TEG regeneration units. Minox®DryGas is suitable for subsea installation.

Oil production systems in arctic regions are challenged by low temperature production. To enable normal gravity separation, a large amount of heating and chemicals are needed to lower the viscosity of the oil.

Vessel Internal Electrostatic Coalescer (VIEC) is a technology for enhancing liquid-liquid separation by using alternating high voltage electrical fields. By the use of VIEC the inlet crude oil viscosity can be higher and significant savings can be made both on the heating demand and the size and quantity of separators needed.

By the use of a VIEC system, the oil separation system is much more robust. In addition to save energy there will be a lower consumption of production chemicals. Recent arctic projects performed by Sulzer includes Goliat (the Barents Sea) and Hebron (Canada).

Baltoflake

10.09.2018 - Jotun

Category: Asset Integrity Management
Subcategory: Corrosion Protection and Metallurgy
Type: Product

In arctic conditions, offshore structures are exposed to physical damage caused by waves and sea ice. In addition, repair and maintenance in the Arctic is either unachievable at all (parts that are underwater and in the splash zone) or limited to a very narrow warm weather window. Therefore, it is critical to select a coating that will ensure protection of steel and concrete from corrosion and abrasion throughout the full design life of a facility.

Baltoflake is an ultra high build, extremely hard-wearing and fast curing anticorrosive coating that provides long time corrosion protection. Typical areas of use are offshore environments, including splash zones, jetties and tidal zones, as well as other equipment and general structural steel where future maintenance is challenging.

Maintenance and repair of anticorrosive protection is a crucial component of safe and sustainable oil and gas operations. However, arctic regions with its harsh climatic and environmental conditions pose a significant challenge to application of paints and coatings in the region. Limited surface treatment and high salinity combined with brush and roller application can be a challenge. Spraying, however, can cause a serious environmental impact as paint wastes during spray application are quite high.

Jotun Smart Pack System is the world's first NORSOK compliant maintenance system for brush and roller. It provides a high build long-lasting corrosion protection combined with a simple mixing and easy application, making maintenance in arctic regions easier.

Oil and gas fields become more marginal as they mature and when reservoir and fluid characteristics become more complex. In turn, newer fields are typically located in more remote and harsh environments, such as the Arctic.

Enhancing asset availability and utilization through better plant operations and maintenance has become one of the dominant sources of improved profitability in manufacturing industries, especially for process segments.

ABB provides asset management solutions that present real-time asset information seamlessly and in the proper context to operations, maintenance, engineering and management. ABB focuses on the actual functionality and performance of the asset unit, not only on simple error messages from device diagnostics.

Lloyd's Register's BOP risk model allows operators to model the risk of their Blow Out Preventer (BOP) against component failure, helping to determine whether to pull the BOP to the surface for inspection and repair or not.

Reduced reliability on the well control procedures will generally give an elevated probability of losing well control barriers during arctic drilling operations and severe weather conditions. The level of risk will vary depending on the drilling rig location in the Arctic and the time of year. During periods of increased strain due to extreme temperatures, icing and negative effects on human performance, the risk of a blowout will increase.

With results received and modelled in Lloyd's Register's program, risk and non-productive time is significantly reduced.

Subsea automation is a complex business, partly because machines with different functions from different vendors have to be integrated into a single system, and partly because more and more functions are being relocated to the bottom of sea.

The solution as ABB sees it where the entire processing plant – production, separation and storage – is relocated to the sea bed and the oil and gas is piped from there directly to onshore tanks.

This will bring customers more effective, reliable and flexible oil and gas production solutions and will enhance how production equipment on the seafloor is powered and controlled by applications on shore or platforms, lowering costs and enabling economically viable production at fields far from existing infrastructure and often in harsh environments.

Traditional pump solutions with a central pump room mean wasted space, added risk and higher operational costs. Framo pumps are different. Submerged in simple sidemounted caissons, our pumps eliminate both hull penetrations and the need for a massive internal pump room and extensive piping.

Powered with the unique electric Framo cable-free concept, submersible pumps also ensure increased uptime. This is thanks to a short, stiff rotating shaft that avoids excessive wear and tear. The total result is an oil and gas pumping solution that reduces risk while saving both space and money.

The finished pumping system is insulated, cooled and lubricated by a small external oil circulation unit, preventing any ingress, enabling it to operate continuously in the toughest conditions.

FRAMO electric fire water pumping systems are the preferred solution when higher pumping capacities are needed, or when the generator package is located too far from the fire water pump. In our solution, the diesel generator supplies power to a cable-free electric submersible pump.

The generator package is a complete containerized unit. It includes a fuel tank, starting system and ancillaries, installed on a single skid in accordance with NFPA20 and industry standards for fire water systems. Having all components in a single, fire-rated enclosure offers technical advantages that lead to savings. Optimized in size and weight, the module is simple to install on deck and designed for ease of maintenance and continuous operation in remote locations and tough conditions, such as the Arctic.

Framo hydraulic fire water pumping systems, with single-stage pumps that rotate slowly during standby, offer a minimal start load and the best possible preparedness. The system uses a submerged hydraulically driven pump. This pump lifts the water to deck level, where it feeds into a pump that is directly driven by the diesel engine. Consequently, the diesel engine’s start load is kept to a minimum.

The lift pump runs continuously at low speed in standby mode, driven by a flow of low-pressure hydraulic fluid circulated by a small electrically driven pump. This ensures continuous availability and lubrication/heating of the fire water lift pump, preventing marine growth in the pump. In harsh environments far from land, such as operations in the Arctic, pump reliability is top priority.

FRAMO water injection pumping systems are the reliable way to increase reservoir pressure. The high-power stages are arranged back-to-back for balanced thrust forces, and the high-speed shaft operates well below first critical speed. The system is designed for minimal wear and tear and easy maintenance, even when working with produced water. The system has shown more than 98% average availability in over 4,000,000 operating hours logged, making it reliable and suitable for use in remote locations.

The FRAMO water injection pumping systems is value-adding by having less than half the footprint of a BB pump. Because a booster pump is integrated into the main injection pump, we eliminate the need for a separate pump with associated piping, valves and manifolds.

DNV GL can assist in developing an ice management procedure for temporary or permanent operations for facilities that operate in areas where there is a risk of interaction between the facility and sea ice and/or glacial ice. Ice management is performed either i) to avoid interaction between an installation and ice (sea ice and/or glacial ice), or ii) to reduce the global and local ice loads. Most commonly it is used to support floating installations.

“Any ice management approach that is intended to support the operation of an offshore system shall be configured to achieve an acceptable level of overall system reliability“ (ISO 19906, 2010).
